State Fair

Something in me snapped when I was at the Taste of Chicago with Erin over the 4th of July. On each street there were about ten booths where you could get food. For the most part you had a choice of beer, pizza, hot dogs or ribs. I don’t even remember what the others were since they were offering random things like “cheesy fries”. I bought some ribs which were only “ok”, and kept looking around on the other streets for something more interesting. But all the other areas offered the exact same thing. It was like 10 restraunts bought up all the space so each avenue was the same as the last one. After a few hours of wandering around I decided that I was going to the Minnesota State fair. I don’t know where that came from, because I’ve always hated the fair. Probably for the same reasons why I hate the mall of America- too many people.

But for some reason I was fine with it this time. I think it was because of all the greasy food that I’ve been craving for the last month, or maybe it’s because when you turn 30 some internal clock goes off that makes you want to gain weight, drive a mini-van and get in heated discussions about sports. I don’t know. Whatever it is I was almost in tears from how happy I was.

Another weird thing was how I bought everything in twos. I bought two cheese curds throughout the day, two glasses of root beer, two corndogs on sticks and two bomb pops. Maybe I was trying to deal with some metaphysical crisis after watching “Inglorious Bastards” and really really enjoying all the killing that happened.

The kids did good through the day, mom and Brian got to spend some quality time with them before they got too pimply and Erin and I snuck off to buy a ‘beer on a stick’ together. We ended the night by fighting to get the girls to sleep, and had the Billadeaus over to watch Mad Men.
